MacGregor Welding Systems manufacture a range of welding head modules varying from the mini module to the high force module. Modules provide the dynamic control of the welding electrode and are ideally suited when a complete resistance weld head is not required, such as when integrated into an automation system. The module can be mounted on any form of actuation system, and provides up to 10mm of dynamic movement. The welding head is used to apply the welding force through one or both of the welding electrodes. The spot welding head also provides a means of mounting the welding electrode, the dynamic motion and response required during the resistance welding process, and the weld trigger signal in some cases. Weld head performance is directly related to its ability to apply consistent weld force and rapid dynamic response as the components collapse during the weld. If the resistance weld head fails to apply consistent force from weld to weld, then the weld joint resistance can vary causing inconsistent welding strengths. If the weld head is not capable of providing the required dynamic motion, then the force will vary on the parts as the parts collapse. The welding electrode can also lose contact in extreme cases, causing weld splash.
